Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, abbreviated BMZ, is a federal ministry in the Federal Republic of Germany with headquarters in Bonn and a sub-headquarters in Berlin. The ministry has been headed since December 8, 2021 by Svenja Schulze of the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Founded in 1961, the ministry promotes economic development within Germany and in other countries through international cooperation and partnerships. It cooperates with international development organizations including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the United Nations.

The mission of the ministry is the basic concept of development cooperation of the Federal Republic of Germany, which must take into account the implementation of democratic principles and human rights in partner countries. On the basis of these principles, objectives and measures are agreed upon in bilateral agreements with partner countries, the results of which are monitored by the ministry. In order to implement these measures, so-called implementing organizations and NGOs are consulted and financially supported.
