Meeting with the Minister of Information: Toward inclusive elections

On April 11, 2023, Minister of Information Ziad Makkari received in his office a delegation from the “Coalition of Associations of Disabled Persons” headed by the President of the Lebanese Union for People with Motor Disabilities Silvana Al-Laqqis.

During the meeting, the delegation raised the issue of the municipal elections on May 7, calling for “taking the same measures that were taken in the previous parliamentary elections, in terms of allocating ground floors so that people with disabilities can vote without difficulty and exercise their electoral right, and using elevators for the disabled, in addition to setting up tents in school playgrounds designated as polling stations, especially since their percentage ranges between 10 and 15 percent of voters, a high percentage, and therefore they should be given the opportunity to vote and choose who they deem appropriate for their choice.”

They also talked about organizing a special workshop on the topic of the disabled, in late April or May in principle, raising the slogan “From the ground my voice comes out.

Al-Laqis said after the meeting: “We discussed with Minister Makkari on matters related to how to make the media supportive and friendly to human rights and encourage the media not to allow any offensive language during the election period for people with disabilities,” she said, noting that “the discussion also dealt with the preparation of a workshop in this direction.”
