The Lebanese Union for People with Physical Disabilities and the Observatory for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities launched a campaign to mark the twentieth anniversary of Law 220/2000. The campaign included several short videos filmed by people with disabilities and digital posters highlighting the most prominent rights they are denied.
The LUPD hopes that civil society and human rights organizations will join this campaign and promote it through social media and other platforms, under the title “Together Against the Marginalization of Persons with Disabilities in Lebanon.”
The campaign’s message reads: “Twenty years since the promulgation of Law 220/2000 on the rights of persons with disabilities in Lebanon. Twenty years of marginalization. The law has not been implemented by successive governments, while about 15% of Lebanese citizens live below the poverty line, deprived of the most basic rights. They are deprived of the right to a decent life, to decent work, to mobility and access to places and information, to housing, to medical care and hospitalization, to education and rehabilitation. Of the right to live in a country that respects them, honors their needs and invests in their abilities. For twenty years, officials have been making false promises to apply the law.”
