On March 12, 2023, the national campaign for the implementation of political rights for persons with disabilities held its first preparatory session for the 2023 municipal and electoral elections at the Lebanese Union for Persons with Motor Disabilities’ center in Beirut, with the participation of 23 male and female volunteers from Beirut and Mount Lebanon.
The session included a presentation by the Secretary of the Union, Jihad Ismail, on the political rights of persons with disabilities in the applicable laws in general and the right to vote in particular, and a summary of the results of the work of the campaign in the 2022 parliamentary elections, both in terms of achievements within the framework of the specific campaign demands and the challenges faced by the monitoring teams. The discussion with the participants in the session dealt with the general policy of awareness-raising, the political and social reality of the upcoming elections, and the possibility of disabled individuals running for membership in municipal councils.
After Beirut and Mount Lebanon, the campaign continues to hold its preparatory sessions for the elections, before holding training workshops for stationary and field observers.
